Partnerships focus: Celebrating our community projects in Canterbury

At King’s, we highly value our links with the local community. They provide valuable opportunities and access to facilities for those outside of the school, as well as giving our pupils the chance to gain new life experiences.

Our busy Partnerships Programme is led by a dedicated team that runs a number of projects throughout the year.

These include sports projects such as our annual Minilympics – an activity day for Primary Schools offering first-class coaching from the likes of Jack Green (former Olympic 400m hurdler). Children get the chance to try out sports they may not have access to ordinarily, something our Rugby Taggers and Rugbylympics primary school outreach days achieve too.

Our teachers and pupils also work directly with children in the classroom, including teaching German and holding a Reading Club at St John’s Primary School. On top of these weekday initiatives, we host a “Saturday Smarties” science masterclasses which have been migrated online since the pandemic but will soon be returning to our science labs.

Sharing the rich heritage of our site is another important way of inspiring children, something our Cathedral Spires project aims to do by inviting selected Year 7 pupils from Spires Academy to learn about the Cathedral’s history, art and architecture each week.

We also recognise the importance of sharing knowledge, and regularly host conferences such as a recent SENCO Conference, which included guest speakers who discussed learning with ADHD and Autism.

All these initiatives carry on a long history of helping local young people to learn and grow, a movement that dates back to our foundations in 597AD and is central to what we do.
