King's School War Memorials

21st January 2010

A website dedicated to the King's School war memorials has just been opened. It can be viewed here: King's School Roll of Honour. It contains details of the careers of all those named on the memorials as well as of two boys and two masters who are not yet there. The project was initiated by Edward Holman OKS and brought to its conclusion by John Hamblin, a former King's School parent.

Form 4A 1912The photograph of Form 4A in 1912 (right) conveys something of the impact of the First War on this generation. Seven of the fifteen boys whose names are known, and their master, were to be killed.  All the other eight boys served in the War; four were wounded (two of them winning the Military Cross). After the War, the ground on which they are seated was hollowed out to create the Memorial Court.

Names: back row (l to r): GHW Gough*, RA Faro, JS Wacher*, WT Champion, HEB de Gruchy, HG Evans, CF Hodgson*, GMcF Kelly Lawson*, [unknown], ADC Macaulay; front row: JAR Ferguson*, EF Hyde, EH Gough, Mr RE Everitt*, EC Bing*, TH Keble, CFW Wait*.

* First World War casualties.

Anyone with further information on any of the men from either War is asked to contact John Hamblin, via the website, or Peter Henderson, the School Archivist at pgh@kings-school.co.uk. Photographs would be particularly welcome.
