King's Week Highlights6th July 2006
This year's King's Week seemed fuller than ever.
Musical highlights included the Serenade in the Cloisters; Songs from the Shows, Jazz on a Summer Sunset, and the Wind Band Concert in the Marquee; the Virtuosi chamber concert and the Jazz Concert in the Shirley Hall; Choirs in the Quire; the Promenade concert in the Archdeacon's Garden; the Composers' Concert and the Songwriters' Concert, both with pieces written by pupils; the Music at Lunchtime series in the Old Synagogue; the Leavers' Concert; and the Maristella String Quartet. The final event was the Gala Symphony Concert in the Shirley Hall on the Wednesday evening.
Plays included: The Shoemaker's Holiday in the Mint Yard; The Little Shop of Horrors and the Remove play Rhinoceros in St Mary's Hall; and the Shell play The Frogs in the Lattergate Garden.
Other events included: the Kidaco Dance Show in the Marquee; the Charity Fashion Show in the Shirley Hall, in aid of the Sereolipi Educational Trust, with the added bonus of an appearance by a group of Samburu warriors; and the Gallic-flavoured Café-Théâtre in the Pupils Social Centre; and the Meditations in the Memorial Chapel every night after the last event.
In addition, there was the St Augustine's Fete on Saturday; not to mention the C.C.F. Parade, a week of cricket matches for the First XI on Birley's and Sports Day on Wednesday.
The Week ended with Commemoration Day on Thursday: the Commemoration Service in the morning; Prize Giving in the afternoon; and the Leavers Ball at Mount Ephraim in the evening.
