Update regarding VAT on fees
Current and prospective parents will no doubt be aware of the announcement by the Government of the imposition of VAT (at 20%) on independent school fees from January 2025.
The King’s School Canterbury fully recognises the challenges posed by this policy and remains committed to keeping fee increases as low as possible without compromising on the depth, breadth and quality of the offer at our school. Mindful of financial pressure on parents and carers, we have been able to avoid passing on the full 20% VAT charge by looking at developing profitable new revenue streams, international expansion, fundraising, and cost controls.
Therefore, whilst these are extremely challenging times for the independent school sector, we are confident that in sharing the impact fairly between the school and parents we will continue to achieve the right balance between an exceptional quality of education and affordability. As a result, the increase to fees will be significantly below the headline 20% figure in all of our schools. This new, reduced level fee will become the basis for any fee changes from the following academic year, 2025/26, too. It is likely we will need to make an inflation-related increase for the 25/26 year, as we think almost all schools will do. We hope parents will take comfort from the fact we do not plan to increase the level of our base fee before inflation, and this should mean families will be able to rely on the fees being held in as tightly as we can manage in these difficult times. Further details can be found below.

International College
While schools have no option but to levy 20% VAT from January 2025, we have committed to lessening the impact on parents by reducing the base fee on which VAT is charged:
Reduction to 2024-5 base fee rate – applicable from January 2025: -4.2%
Effective fee impact from January 2025 following imposition of 20% VAT: 15%
Termly fee as of September 2024 | Termly fee as of January 2025 | Rate of reduction to fee | VAT payable | Revised fee inclusive of VAT: January 2025 | Effective VAT impact on Sept ’24 fee | Effective VAT saving resulting from reduced fee | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Boarding | £17,650 | £16,910 | 4.2% | 20% | £20,292 | 15% | 5% |
Reducing the base fee by 4.2% means we are able to limit the effective increase to parents to 15%, lower than the headline cost of VAT at 20%. The headline reduction we have been able to achieve at the International College is slightly less than at the Senior School because of the International School’s smaller class sizes, higher staff:student ratio, and the nature of administering short-term courses. As previously explained, our principle is to maintain the quality of the outstanding education your child receives here, which we know is rightly so important to you, while at the same time we follow, as we of course must, the new tax law expected to be imposed on all independent schools from January 2025.
