The Combined Cadet Force is celebrating its first cadet to achieve an iDEA Award, with Cadet Lance Corporal Francisca earning her Bronze level certificate.
The Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) is a nationally recognised programme that develops digital skills in young people.
As international security challenges evolve, from cyber threats and information warfare to emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, it has become essential for young people to develop strong digital skills and a solid understanding of the online world.
Equipping them with this knowledge not only strengthens national resilience but also empowers the next generation to navigate complex global risks with confidence, responsibility, and critical awareness.
Aspiring to be a digital version of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the iDEA Award offers Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels.
Francisca has chosen her own pathway through the programme, completing courses in digital safety and ethics, cyber security, critical thinking, sustainability, fake news, online reputation, machine learning, productivity, and app development.
Unlike traditional taught courses, the iDEA Award is entirely self-guided. Cadets tailor their learning by choosing areas of interest and completing MOOC-style modules.
Each module earns points across five core digital skill categories: digital citizen, digital worker, digital maker, digital entrepreneur, and digital gamer.
Completing the award requires curiosity, independence, and creativity, qualities Francisca has exemplified throughout her time in the CCF.
Francisca has also picked up a range of other qualifications this year, including her radio user qualification, and she is working towards her Emergency First Aid at Work certificate.
Major Alistair Goddard, Contingent Commander, praised her achievement: “I am delighted that we have our first cadet complete an iDEA Award. Francisca has shown real initiative and commitment, and her success sets a brilliant example for others in the CCF who are beginning their own iDEA journeys.”
With more cadets now starting their awards, the CCF looks forward to supporting the next wave of digital trailblazers.
