On Sunday, October 6th, the boys from Galpin’s House came together for a fantastic cause, taking part in their ‘Hoops for Hope’ charity event. The aim was to sink as many basketball hoops as possible between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., all in support of Toilet Twinning, a charity dedicated to improving global water, sanitation, and hygiene through Tearfund. The initial target was to shoot over 1000 hoops in ten hours but the boys ended with the impressive total of 2870.

The event was a resounding success, with the boys not only showing off their basketball skills but also surpassing their fundraising target. Initially, Galpin’s House set out to raise £780, enough to twin all 13 toilets in their house with newly built toilets in impoverished communities across the globe. The twinning initiative, which costs £60 per toilet, directly funds clean water, proper sanitation, and health education programs in countries like Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Nepal, and others.

The importance of this cause cannot be overstated. Approximately 2 billion people worldwide live without access to proper toilets, leading to severe health risks, particularly for children. Each day, over 700 children under five die from preventable diseases like diarrhea, linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation. By participating in the Toilet Twinning project, Galpin’s House is not only helping to break the cycle of bad health and poverty in these regions but also raising awareness within their community.

For each toilet twinned, the house received a framed picture with GPS coordinates of the corresponding facility in another part of the world. These pictures will now hang proudly on the doors of Galpin’s House toilets as a lasting reminder of the event’s impact and the importance of supporting life-changing causes.

Incredibly, the boys managed to raise £1,760, more than doubling their original target thanks to donations and gift aid contributions. This overwhelming generosity means that they have been able to twin their 13 toilets and fund even more life-saving sanitation facilities for communities in need.

The success of ‘Hoops for Hope’ is a testament to the dedication and compassion of the Galpin’s House, proving that when people come together for a common cause, they can make a real difference in the world.
