A very warm welcome back to both our existing families and those joining the school for the first time. The school was delighted to see so many happy children return on Wednesday and share their holiday stories.
During assembly, pupils explored the meaning of the New Year and learned how to start with a blank page. They were encouraged to make this year even better than the last. In addition, the tradition of making resolutions began with the Romans, and January takes its name from the Roman god Janus. Interestingly, not all cultures celebrate New Year on 1st January.
Teachers encouraged children to make resolutions that reflect school values and build positive habits at home. For example, they suggested saying “Please”, “Thank you” and “Good Morning”; reading for 15–20 minutes daily; completing chores without being asked; trying something new; having a weekly screen-free day; packing bags responsibly; speaking kindly to siblings, friends, parents and teachers; paying attention in lessons; avoiding negative words like “bored” or “I can’t”; and eating more vegetables and fruit.
Furthermore, the school hopes every child makes reading a priority this year. Ms Mitchell shared powerful statistics on the benefits of regular reading, which highlight why this habit matters.
Finally, families can look forward to the FJKS Coffee Afternoon and Burns Night, which are always highlights on the calendar. The school wishes everyone a lovely weekend.
