Matthew Stonier (OJKS) joined the elite club of people to run a sub four-minute mile at the weekend as he took home the Nike Emsley Carr Mile title, winning by a margin of just two-hundredths of a second.

Matthew, who is currently studying at Loughborough University is the current BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) 1500m champion and now finds himself on a list with some of the most well-known middle-distance runners of all time. Previous winners of the event include Steve Ovett, Seb Coe, Haile Gebrselassie, Asbel Kiprop and Hicham El Guerrouj who have all gone on to be Olympic Champions.

Matthew’s winning time of 3:54:89 has gained him an invitation to run in the Diamond League event (1500m) next weekend in Birmingham where he will line up alongside the very best athletes in the world. The event will be live on BBC One on Saturday 21st May with the race scheduled for 3.28pm.
