Our Monday’s Experts Talk series continued last night with a talk from Dr Goddard, Teacher of Politics.
Carl von Clausewitz’s “On War” is considered one of the greatest works of military strategy and the philosophy of war. Placing warfare in a political, cultural and social context, he is best known for concluding that “War is the continuation of policy with other means”.
Dr Goddard’s talk examined what Clausewitz meant by this concept and, with case studies drawn from historical and contemporary conflict, assessed the extent to which Clausewitz’s philosophy of war still applies.
Dr Goddard has a PhD from the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London where he taught classes on contemporary security issues and the history of warfare in the modern era. He teaches History, Politics and Leadership at the school and is Contingent Commander of the CCF.
