The King’s School International College Celebrates Eco-Schools Green Flag Accreditation
On January 15th, 2025, The King’s School International College proudly unveiled the Eco-Schools Green Flag, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability and environmental stewardship. This prestigious award is a nationwide accreditation recognising schools and nurseries that excel in creating and delivering sustainability initiatives on their campuses.
The unveiling ceremony was a special moment for the International College community. Mr Kadinopoulos, a dedicated advocate for sustainability within the school, delivered an inspiring presentation highlighting the journey to achieving the Green Flag and the positive environmental impact of the projects undertaken. Adding a celebratory touch to the event, the International College band performed a rendition of Joni Mitchell’s iconic song Big Yellow Taxi, reminding everyone of the importance of preserving our natural world.
Our Journey to the Green Flag
Last year, we embarked on this exciting initiative for the first time, successfully completing three engaging and meaningful projects:
- Building a Hedgehog House: This project encouraged wildlife to thrive in our International College (IC) garden, creating a safe haven for hedgehogs and fostering biodiversity.
- Water-Saving Campaign: Through creative videos and posters displayed around the college, we raised awareness about conserving water, empowering students and staff to make small changes with a big impact.
- Artivism for Ocean Conservation: Highlighting the devastating effects of plastic pollution in our oceans, we turned single-use plastics into an eye-catching jellyfish art installation, inspiring conversations and action.
We also hosted an Environmental Day for Year 9s, 10s, and 4s, featuring sustainability-focused activities and a sustainably sourced picnic. Collaboration has been at the heart of our efforts, as we partnered with The King’s School Canterbury (KSC) and Junior King’s School (JKS) to tackle environmental challenges and raise awareness across our community.
Looking Ahead: Ambitious Plans for 2025
Our Green Flag achievement has inspired us to aim even higher in the coming year. Key initiatives include:
- Building a Plastic Bottle Greenhouse: Transforming the IC garden with a sustainable outdoor classroom made from recycled plastic bottles, providing a creative and eco-friendly learning space.
- Promoting Hand Dryers Over Paper Towels: Encouraging a campus-wide transition to hand dryers, reducing waste and improving sustainability practices.
- Fostering Global Environmental Collaboration: Building partnerships with schools around the world to exchange ideas and create a global impact.
A Commitment to Sustainability
At The King’s School International College, sustainability is more than just a goal; it is a shared commitment to protecting our planet for future generations. The Eco-Schools Green Flag is a testament to the hard work, creativity, and dedication of our students and staff.
We are excited to continue leading the way in environmental education and innovation, setting an example for schools worldwide.
