The King’s School Canterbury has officially opened its new Day House, New House – offering families greater flexibility while preserving the school’s long-standing boarding traditions.

The historic 16th-century building sits within the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral and enjoys one of the finest views of the landmark anywhere in the city. Though the final touches are still being made to its interiors, New House is already set to become a hub of activity for pupils and the base of the school’s new Flexi-boarding provision.

New House is a Day House under the leadership of Housemaster Mr James Green, and also serves as the base for Flexi-boarding, which is overseen by Mr Max Ganderton, Head of Flexi-Boarding. Flexi-boarding is available to day pupils on any school night, with stays ranging from one-off bookings to regular weekly nights or half-term blocks. Pupils remain in their usual day houses until 7pm, before moving into New House for supervised prep, social time and a comfortable overnight stay. Breakfast is provided the following morning before they return to their houses for registration.

The provision also extends to exeat weekends, when traditional boarding houses close. Up to 30 beds will be available for boarders wishing to remain at school, with meals, study time and activities all included. Oversight is provided by Mr Ganderton and resident pastoral staff, ensuring the same level of care and supervision found in King’s full boarding houses.

This development marks a significant step for the school, broadening access to boarding life while supporting families who need a more flexible arrangement. Further details, including images of the interiors and the booking system, will be released later this term.
