The King’s School Canterbury recently welcomed Head of Football, Aslan Odev, for an engaging talk titled The Difference Between Coaching and Teaching. Addressing pupils, staff, and sports enthusiasts, Mr Odev explored the fundamental distinctions between traditional teaching methods and a player-centred approach to coaching.

In his talk, Mr Odev challenged the conventional notion that teaching is a one-way transfer of knowledge from adult to student. While this model is effective in structured subjects such as mathematics and science, he argued that sport—particularly football—demands a different approach. “Sport and football are dynamic and emergent environments,” he explained. “If the coach provides all the solutions, how can players adapt to the unpredictable nature of match day?”

Drawing from his extensive experience, Mr Odev emphasised the importance of fostering a problem-solving mindset in athletes, ensuring they are prepared for the complexities of the game. He advocated for a coaching style that encourages players to think critically, make decisions under pressure, and develop autonomy on the pitch. “By creating an environment where players remain in a state of problem-solving, we better prepare them for performance,” he noted.

Mr Odev’s insights provided valuable takeaways for aspiring athletes and coaches alike, reinforcing the school’s commitment to excellence in both academics and sport.
