A Royal Visit

Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh paid a special visit to Canterbury this week to unveil statues of themselves at Canterbury Cathedral.

A number of Scholars and Purples were fortunate enough to attend a service within the Cathedral prior to the unveiling of the statues carved by sculptor Nina Bilbey. Other pupils and staff lined the Precincts to welcome the royal party.

The statues are the first royal sculptures to be installed at the Cathedral during the Queen’s reign and have been created to mark her Diamond Jubilee. They occupy plinths by the Cathedral’s West Door, complementing existing statues of Queen Victoria – the only other monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee – and Prince Albert.
