Arise Sir Michael!
Michael Morpurgo OKS has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year honours list with a knighthood for his services to literature and charity.
Upon accepting the award Sir Michael told the Press Association the honour was “about one book (War Horse)” and added “There was never a knight that owed so much to his horse as this one – and in fact, we will give the knighthood to Joey and call him Sir Joey.”
War Horse, Morpurgo’s 1982 children’s book became the now world-famous play which has been showing in London’s West End for eight years. In 2011 it was adapted for the big screen under the directorship of Steven Spielberg and received a nomination for Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards.
