Carlo Sforza Travel Scholarship: Rosy immersed in Italian culture during summer in Monopoli

Thanks to an initial gift from Mr and Mrs Howard Scott, King’s is able to offer a number of Carlo Sforza Travel Awards to pupils in 6b. These are intended to help fund ‘travel in the furtherance of their education’ during the summer holidays before their final year.

In 2019, Rosy Waters (Mitchinson’s, 6a) was a recipient of the award and has written a report of her experiences below.

During the summer I went to Monopoli in Italy to be completely immersed in the Italian language and culture. With the money I received from the Carlo Sforza Travel Scholarship I was able to afford the flights and the price to stay with an Italian woman, Mariella, who spoke no English. Every day I had to speak in Italian, helping improve my Italian language, which has consequently helped me in my Italian A-Level.

During this trip, I learnt how to make pasta and cook delicious Italian dishes, helped Mariella with her Airbnb in the countryside, ate a lot of ice cream and went swimming in the sea daily. As well as exploring Monopoli, Mariella took me to surrounding towns, such as Polignano a Mare, Lecce, and Alberobello.

I had a fantastic experience that would not have been possible if it weren’t for this Scholarship, thank you.
