James defends title with GB U21s

Hockey player James Oates (Carlyon, 2011-16) won gold for Great Britain Under-21s at the Sultan of Johor Cup for the second consecutive year.

Having been one of nine members of last year’s winning squad to return to Malaysia for the annual international tournament, James helped GB to a dramatic victory in the final as a last-minute winner sealed a 2-1 win over India.

Some of the midfielder’s family, including his brother Will (Carlyon, 2013-18) who is pictured above, flew out to support him.

The final marked James’ last ever game for the Under-21s so Stuart Rushmere’s winning goal in the dying seconds was a great way to cap off his time in the junior ranks.

He has been retained in the GB Development Squad so we hope to see James playing representative hockey again, and it was great to see the success of the senior teams’ last weekend in qualifying for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
