KMUN conference 2018
The King’s School Model United Nations Society hosted its second annual conference and welcomed 70 students from schools across Kent; it provides a great opportunity for pupils aged 13-18 to discuss global politics.
The King’s MUN Society has signed a partnership with the University of Kent and committees were chaired by university students who have university-level MUN training.
At the Opening Ceremony Dr Harmonie Toros, Professor of International Conflict Analysis at the University of Kent, spoke about anti-terrorism and the UN’s role of creating solutions to international threats. Pupils then broke up into four committees to discuss current political topics, which included ECOSOC and the monopolies of big pharmaceutical companies, the situation in Kurdistan, Social and Humanitarian Committee issues and the implications of an ageing population, modern day slavery, and promoting democratic rule of law in LEDCs.
Individual debates in committees were lively and many resolutions were proposed and passed throughout the day. The day ended with a General Assembly, during which six resolutions were successfully passed. It was an enjoyable day, full of constructive and intense debates.
