Matt wins Loughborough International 3k race in season opener

Matthew Stonier (OKS Marlowe, 2015-20) started his season with an impressive victory at the Loughborough International Athletics meeting on Sunday.

Matt showed impressive composure to win a tactical 3,000m race in 8 minutes and 30 seconds, allowing Rory Leonard—who was representing England—to take a 15m lead with a lap and a half to go before closing the gap in the final 200m.

Matt won the English School’s Cross Country title in his final year at King’s in 2020 before taking a place at Loughborough University, but has had very few chances to compete in the last 12 months due to cancellations caused by the pandemic.

Watch the final moments of Matt’s race below.

In his post-race interview, Matt said it was a very satisfying win after a difficult race involving a lot of pushing and tripping.
