Miranda Merron (OKS) Visits The King’s School, Canterbury
Former pupil, Miranda Merron (KS 1985-1987) started sailing when she was 5 years old on the River Seine. At the age of 9 she was crewing for her father and has now been sailing professionally for the past 14 years, having opted to leave her career in advertising. She sails mainly in offshore racing and has competed in solo, double-handed and fully-crewed races, including the Route du Rhum, the Transat, Quebec – Saint Malo and the Volvo Ocean Race. She has won the Transat Jacques Vabre and Round Britain & Ireland races.
In 2009, she was navigator with the all-female team on the Open 60 Aviva, when the team set a new outright World Record for Round Britain & Ireland, taking 16 hours off the previous record. Most recently Miranda came 7th in the 10th Route de Rhum in 2014, a 3542 nm singlehanded race from Saint-Malo (France) to Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe).
On Friday 8th May, Miranda visited The King’s School, Canterbury to give a talk on ‘Ocean Racing and Other Adventures.’ Current and former staff and pupils came to listen to Miranda’s exciting and inspiring stories.
