Saturday Smarties Science Success

The final science master class in The King’s School Saturday Smarties programme took place on May 16th.

Over fifty Year 5&6 children from eleven schools have attended three different master classes during the academic year with lots of exciting practical demonstrations, experiments and problem-solving.

The first master class (held in Autumn term) consisted of rainbows, eyeballs and fireworks, focussing on the theme of light.

The second master class (held in Lent term) focussed on forensic science and introduced a range of physical, chemical, geological and biological crime-detecting techniques.

This term’s class has been about climate change: who’s to blame? The pupils studied the evolution of the atmosphere, what drives weather and how CO2 levels are rising.

Several King’s students were involved as expert demonstrators to help the visiting primary school pupils. Teachers and parents were welcome to stay for the master classes or have a tour of the school.

King’s is currently collecting feedback on the year’s Saturday Smarties events to develop the programme further for next year.
