Top 20 hockey team in the country!

After their tremendous performance winning the County Hockey Tournament last month, the U18 girls travelled to Bedford to play in the Regional qualifier on Thursday 15th October.

In the first game, King’s dominated against Gresham’s, winning 2-0. The second game against Queenswood was a much closer affair. King’s started slowly and went into half time 1-0 down. It would be the only goal to be conceded all day however, after a motivational team talk from Miss Wilson fired the team into action.

The second half saw the familiar King’s tenacity and defensive aggression. Alice Brett (CY) found the backboard after some great individual skill to equalise and, with only minutes to go, Amanda Milton (LX) found herself in a 1v1 with the goalkeeper but with great composure slotted the ball past her to score the winner!

This was a crucial win and meant that the 0-0 draw in the next game against Kimbolton would be sufficient for King’s to top the group and send the team into the playoff match against the other pool. The winner of this game would go through to the Regional Finals.

This match was against The Perse School and Amelia Brown (WL) was tasked with great defensive responsibility to nullify their right midfield threat. An early breakaway from King’s, after Kate McLeod Scott (WL) won the ball deep in defence, found the forward line in great positions and with some excellent decision-making the ball was passed to Genevieve Hull (LX) on the far post to score a classic King’s team goal.

Morgause Lomas (WL) made some key saves including Perse’s short corner drag flicks. When the final whistle blew, the team realised how true King’s character can help them achieve things they never thought were possible.

Many thanks to all those parents who travelled along to support the girls. The team now go on to the East Regional Finals Day on Tuesday 24th November where they will join the three other finalists to decide who will make it through to National Finals. This achievement means King’s U18 Girls are one of the top 20 hockey schools in the country – a truly incredible achievement!
