King’s offers science masterclasses for Year 5 and 6 pupils from primary schools in and around Canterbury as part of its Canterbury Primary Science Partnership.
The aim is to broaden experiences of science in lab settings and give the pupils an immersive feel for the various science subjects. These “Saturday Smarties” pupils, selected by their schools on the basis of interest and ability, attend sessions across the year, each of which focuses on a different scientific theme. Recent sessions have looked at forensic investigation with pupils learning how to lift fingerprints, analyse blood and soil samples and look at dental imprints to discover the many ways that science can help solve crimes.
Running for over ten years, over 500 pupils have been part of the Saturday Smarties programme and our feedback has shown that many have been inspired to consider studying science later on at university. As a Year 5 boy from one local school said after one session: “This is the day I became a scientist.”
